December 16, 2013:
The primary goal of Curry Health Network is to provide quality healthcare services to our community. In doing so, it will be vital to replace Curry General Hospital, which is an aged, worn, and outdated critical access hospital in Gold Beach, Oregon. This is the project addressed by the following RFQ. Portions of the hospital are more than 60 years of age, and the structure is beginning to fail. On November 5, 2013, our district voted to tax themselves $10 million over the next 30 years to build a replacement facility. This $10 million will give the organization borrowing power to secure financing for the additional funds needed to build the replacement facility.
Curry General Hospital is the inpatient venue for Curry Health Network in Gold Beach, a remote community along Highway 101 and the county seat of Curry County, which is the southernmost county on the beautiful Oregon coast. Curry General Hospital is situated one block off the highway in the center of town.
Curry General Hospital serves the district of 7,500 citizens of Gold Beach, Port Orford, and Agness. The healthcare tax district's boundaries run from Elk River (three miles north of Port Orford), south by Pistol River (halfway to Brookings from Gold Beach), and east to Agness; they also extend to the untaxed communities within the Brookings zip code. The county demographics are uniquely elderly, with almost 30% of the population age 65 and older.
A secondary service area includes Brookings, 28 miles away at the southernmost part of the county. This secondary service area has a population of over 14,000 citizens, yet over 70% of the healthcare market opts to go to Crescent City, California, 25 miles south of the Brookings area. Curry Health Network has a 50,000 square foot multispecialty clinic in Brookings and may be looking to expand inpatient and emergency services to that campus in the future. Currently Curry General Hospital is the sole hospital serving Curry County.
As a public district, a Board of five elected directors governs Curry Health Network. The organization is under new management with CEO Andrew Bair coming on board in November 2012, joined in May 2013 by COO/CFO Ken Landau. This duo has teamed up with the Board and executive team to bring the organization to a point of attaining the growth potential of this organization, which is experiencing financial stability under the current leadership.
